The “Devil's Dictionary” work is actually a satirical lexicon. Because he widely criticizes a lot of aspects in society, he was called "Bitter Bierce," by his colleagues.

The” Devil's Dictionary” presents some reinterpretations on the terms and words found in the English language which presented them in lampooning cants and political doublespeak together with other aspects associated with human foolishness and frailties.
The book was first printed in 1906 and was originally titled “The Cynic's Word Book”. The title was later changed to “The Devil's Dictionary” in 1911.
